Prepare a Leadership Mandate Brief

A good brief makes the first conversation about fit rather than discovery. It also shows quickly whether the role is ready to fill. Use the sections below as a template for any candidate, or fill in the form to send it to me.

What to settle first

  1. 01

    The problem to solve

What is not working, or what has no owner? Describe the situation, not the job title.

  2. 02

    Reporting line and sponsor

Who the role reports to, who sponsors it, and who resolves disputes about its remit.

  3. 03

    Decision rights

Which decisions the role makes alone, which it shares, and which it only advises on: architecture, release, hiring, vendors, budget.

  4. 04

    Team

The people in place today, the managers, and any approved plan to grow or restructure.

  5. 05

    Success at six months

Two or three outcomes the sponsor and the peers agree on.

  6. 06

    Timeframe and engagement

Permanent, substantial interim or operating partner; start window; any hard deadlines.

  7. 07

    Location

On-site, hybrid or remote; time zones; travel.

  8. 08

    Broad economics

Optional at this stage. A band or basis is enough. You don't need to share confidential figures in a first message.

Not sure the role is coherent yet? Run it through the mandate scorecard first.

Send the brief
